Installation Procedures for Vance.Net, Windows 31

Whenever you are asked to type in something, it will be in quotation marks. Remember to OMIT the actual quotation marks when inserting text, only type what is quoted. 

1. Turn on your computer. If it boots into Windows, exit out of Windows to a DOS Prompt. Otherwise, wait until your computer gives you the command prompt. You should see the following message:

C:\ >

2. Type the following commands each line followed by the enter key.

"CD \"
"MD VANCENET"
"CD VANCENET"

Your final line should be: C:\VANCENET>

3. Insert disk 5 in the floppy drive A:. Type in the following command:

"A:\PKUNZIP A:\VANCEN31.ZIP"

It will then ask you to insert disk 1 and press a key. Then disk 2 and so on until you have gone to disk 5 again.

4. Next, type "WIN" followed by the ENTER key to return to Windows. Click on the File menu, then Run and type in "C:\VANCENET\SETUP16.EXE" then press the ENTER key. Or browse from the run menu in the C:\VANCENET directory and run the setup program.

5. It will then start the Netscape Installation program. Click on the NEXT key to continue through the prompts. When it asks for another disk, simply hit the ENTER key. It will ask for another disk several times; simply hit ENTER at each prompt. 

6. When it is done run the Account Setup Wizard. Click NEXT through the next few prompts until you get to Account Information. Enter your FULL NAME and COMPANY NAME in this box. If you are not installing Vance.Net for your company, you may leave the COMPANY NAME field blank. When this information is entered, click on the NEXT key. 

7. The next screen will ask for your Login Name and Password. This information is CASE SENSITIVE, meaning that "FRED", "Fred" and "fred" are seen differently in the program. Usually, your Login Name and Password are lowercase. Enter this information then click on the NEXT button. This information should have been given to you when you first created your account with Vance.Net. If you have any doubt about this information, give us a call.

8. Next, you may have to enter Vance.Net's phone number. Enter the correct phone number for your area.

9. The next step is to select your modem. The Account Setup Program will usually find your modem automatically. If not, you may select it manually.

10. After selecting the correct modem, you must enter the number you will be dialing from. Be sure to fill in both the Area Code and Phone Number boxes. Click on NEXT when you have entered your number.

11. If you have Call Waiting on your line, it may disconnect you from the Internet if you are online and someone tries to call. To prevent this from occurring, you must disable Call Waiting. This can be accomplished by clicking on the Disable Call Waiting box. Next, click on the Down Arrow beside the clear input box and select "*70,". If "*70," is not an option, you may click in the input box beside the Disable Call Waiting option and type in "*70," manually. Make sure there is a comma after *70 so it reads "*70,".

12. If you are on a private phone system and need to press a number to access a regular dial tone, click on the next box and input the number you must press. 

13. The system is automatically set to use TONE dialing. If you do not have TONE dialing on your phone line, you can switch the setting to PULSE by clicking on the PULSE box.

14. Click on OK, then Close that window to go back to the Desktop. 

15. That's it! You should now have an icon on your desktop that says "Dial Vance.Net". Click on this icon and it will ask for your password. Check that your Login Name is correct, then click on Connect to dial Vance.Net.

16. After you are connected, it should automatically run Netscape Navigator. If it does not, click on the "Vance.Net" group then "Netscape Navigator". You can also minimize the connection window by clicking on the small Down Arrow in the upper right hand corner of the box.

17. To change your homepage to Vance.Net in Netscape Navigator, click on Options, then General Preferences. Where it says, "Browser Starts With" click on the box that says http://home.netscape.com and change it to http://www.vance.net. Now, click on OK and then the HOME button at the very top. It will then load up the Homepage for Vance.Net.
